Should Government be Involved in Moral Legislation?

    June 29, 2015 By jonstott

Why is the government involved in marriage, birth certificates, personal property records, and other personal legal issues?

Government is the intermediary between individuals. It establishes the rights of decision and property. When a loved one is injured, who has the legal right to make decisions for care? Parents, spouse, or children? In the United States, it is usually the spouse that retains that legal right, although these rights are often challenged in cases such as Terry Schiavo, the woman who was on life support for 15 years. Government plays this same intermediary role anytime divorce or death takes place. The laws that society—through government—establishes determines who is entitled to the property or guardianship if children or mental capacity is diminished.

The idea that religion, morality, and government can be separate is a myth.

Government has always been in the business of legislating morals and values. There is no separation between civil and criminal (although there is a separation between felony and misdemeanor).

When we have laws and penalties for crimes such as murder—it is a legislation that states murder is wrong.

When we have laws and penalties for tax evasion it is government and society’s way of stating that evading taxes is wrong.

When government does not allow certain behaviors or actions, it is because society holds them to be either morally wrong or counter-productive to a thriving, successful society.

In the discussion on same-sex marriage, most people get lost in the trees and are blind to the new forest the Left is creating. Let me share with you what Karl Marx had written in his Communist Manifesto.

“Abolition of the family! Even the most radical flare up at this infamous proposal of the Communists. But, you will say, we destroy the most hallowed of relations (i.e., family), when we replace home education by social” (http://www.gutenberg.org/files/61/61.txt, accessed June 2015, parenthesis added).

Marx was advancing the idea of state education that taught children what to believe, disallowing family input, and crippling family relations as the ultimate goal of Communism. Same sex marriage has little to do with civil liberties. It has everything to do with fulfilling the communist agenda and replacing traditional families with government-sponsored social institutions. Same-sex marriage is simply the first of these institutions.
